DSC have a vinyl out on Death$ucker and Life4Land called The DSC EP, they also have an EP on Kingdom, both dancefloor killers. Stivs has a 7 inch single coming out on his new label Bomba Cut Recordings which is a joint release with Death$ucker Records, and both Ed Cox and Stivs will be touring the UK and Europe this Autumn.

After the disaster that was the hosting company moving the entire site to a new server that didn't support the slightly dated previous version of DSWAT, the new site is now fully operational on a new server! It's been a long while since the last DSWAT newsletter, but we're back with a vengeance! Be sure to check out exclusive import releases from Japan's Murder Channel label with Cardopusher's new album "Unity Means Power" and DJ Technorch's "Boss On Parade Remixes" with shocking tracks from the likes of FFF, Soundbites, DJ Donna Summer, Luke's Anger and Cardopusher. If you haven't heard, I recently made a soundtrack and sound effects for a new Playstation 3 game called Savage Moon. It's a tower defence strategy game available in Europe and USA on the PSN (Playstation Network) download shop. Savage Moon is not currently available in Japan, so I decided to ask a few friends from Japan to remix the soundtrack in the hope that people there might like it enough to want to play the game. Pushycat is the fastest way to keep in touch with the latest underground digital content! If you are interested in getting involved, please read on…

A Bit About Pushycat:

Pushycat is a system of distributing audio files via a peer-to-peer (p2p) network. The unique aspect of the system is that it designed for artists/suppliers who have a user-base and and who are currently providing a service in terms of distributing content. The aim is for the user-base to receive content directly from a trusted supplier. On a regular bases the supplier (in this case Death$ucker Records) will feed the users with audio files of their taste. This will benefit time poor users, who instead of searching for new music will have music delivered directly to them via the Pushycat system.

What You Need to Do…

Bristol is to get a flavour of Eastern Europe - but not the stereotypes of Cossack dancing, vodka or Stalin-memorabilia - this is an invasion by the post-Cold War generation; doing their own thing, their own way; which involves lots and lots of noise. In June local party-throwers GoatLab, is hosting two of Eastern Europe top DJs, one of whom has his UK debut here in Bristol. Anton Nikolajewitsch Gromov, or just Gromov to his fans and Trippmatic are from Russia and Poland respectively. Gromov, a purveyor of musical forms from breakbeat oriented electronic music to bone-crushing drill n' bass has already established a strong reputation for powerful live performances from all over Europe from Moscow to St. Petersburg, from Berlin to Oslo prompting one review to describe his performance glowingly as, "..a vodka-soaked breakbeat massacre!"

Playing alongside is Wroclaw based Polish DJ and producer Tippmatic. He's been organising gigs and playing at virtually every breakcore gig in his native Poland for the last two years and met Bristol breakcore producer Parasite when he invited him over for a mini-tour last year. Now Parasite is returning the hospitality and we all get to hear the results of this East-meets-West mashup. Local acts War Against Sleep (with a psychedelic audio-visual feast with a goaty twist!) and Michael J Rocks (of the Bath based 1manarmy collective) join Bristol breakcore suprememo Parasite and others for a bilateral breakcore Eastern Block party.

Or is it just "Progressive Progressive Progrsv House"? Either way, he's a long way ahead of the rest of the game. Matt Jackson one of Bristol's most talented up-and-coming breakcore producers! He is also one half of the Blunderphonics crew, who have organised many a good night down at the legendary Black Swan. He beat Parasite in the first round of Laptop Battle 5 only to be knocked out in the final by house favorite Defazed. His music is raw and full of energy, and he has also been known to play his live set entirely from a game pad using Max/MSP! See for yourself:

Death$ucker: Bringing Back the Raggacore!!!

What is Raggacore? According to Wikipedia:

Raggacore is a genre of music resembling a faster version of ragga jungle, or breakcore with dancehall, ragga or reggae style basslines and vocals.

This unique genre of reggae-infused breakcore first surfaced in 2001 with releases like Venetian Snares' "Clearance Bin" 7" (History Of The Future) and DJ Scud's "Full Watts" series. Artists like Bong-Ra and The Bug (with his label Razor X Productions) were also making ragga-fused music around the same time. Since those early days, there has been a move towards a more defined Raggacore sound from labels like Peace Off, Clash, Mashit, Shockout, Sozialistischer Plattenbau, Sprengstoff, Kool.POP and artists like Aaron Spectre, DJ C, Soundmurderer, Shitmat, FFF, Rotator, Istari Lasterfahrer, Krumble.

More recenlty a new wave of artists have been pushing the Raggacore sound. From Cambridge (UK) the Life4Land crew have been putting on free parties, releasing records and churning out tracks like there's no tomorrow. Peace Off have also been on the case pushing artists like Cardopusher, Dr. Bastardo, Krumble, Kovert and Repeater.

Ragga and Reggae music have been an big influence on my musical tastes, especially living in St. Pauls (Bristol's Reggae Mecca!). This can be heard in some of my own productions, in particular tracks like "Strong Like A Lion" and "Toxic Dancehall", but also on some past Death$ucker releases:

First up is D$R27, a split 12" by the mysterious Johnny Clash and Stivs of Life4Land. On the A side Johnny Clash mashes up Damian Marley's version of "Exodus" with amen / gabba breaks at 240bpm! Following swiftly on is D$R28, a split 12" by Eustachian & The Teknoist (currently on tour in Europe). Eustachian proves that they aren't all about experimental thrash metal with "Stronface", a raggacore stormer with crazy time signatures and heavy bass. Coming up in April 2008 is D$R29 by Krumble (Peace Off/Jungle Therapy). Krumble brings his unique blend of choppy breakcore and cut-up jungle bass terror to Death$ucker with two dancefloor killers "Time To Burn" and "Fucking Hostile". Link up Krumble's MySpace to hear previews of both tracks!

Next up is D$R30 by Stivs (Life4Land), with an 8 track, double 12" album (a 1st for Death$ucker!) featuring some of the finest ragga-jungle, breakcore and wonkstep EVER! "Music For Sleeping" is one of my side projects first released in 2001, written in West Wales and Bristol between 1998-2001. Much of his ambient soundscape work was used for various art and short film / animation projects including Ana Kronschnabl's "Distance / Time" and "A Walk in the Woods" with Liz Milner (see http://dswat.streamlinetrial.co.uk/parasite/?Projects for more info).

Their break came in 2002 when Death$ucker head-honcho Parasite booked them to support Fanny and Venetian Snares on board the good ship Thekla (the floating venue brought to Bristol by Vivian Stanshall as the Old Verity Showboat). Since then they have jumped at the opportunity to support any act their name sounds funny next to. They have a new CD coming out in November 2007 on Death$ucker Records with a bunch of their new tracks and remixes by Planet Mu's Shitmat and The Teknoist, Cock Rock Disco's Jason Forrest, Manchester's king of mash-up Hoonboy, V/Vm's hardoff (aka M-Pi), Parasite and Zod's Binray.

In other Death$ucker news I had a chat with Armin over the weekend and we've finally slated a release date for the Gusset remix album that was now been THREE YEARS in the making. This September you will see a bargain priced CD of remixes from Gusset's Skidmark CD-R release (last few left on dSWAT). Ask Dr Kim – clever anagram, see? – will feature remixes from The Teknoist, Shitmat, Jason Forrest, Parasite, Binary, Atki2, hard.off, m||m, Hoonboy, Twocsinak and more!

We gave up on the slutty nurse photoshoot idea due to budget restrictions (ie, £0). So instead we will be making a collage of gusset photos. Please send photos of your gusset to: gusset[at]gmail.com. You don’t have to be wearing the item, just pose your pants and snap away. Photos will be used under a CC licence and you will get a credit in the artwork. You won't get paid mind, but you get the satisfaction of being able to point and say;

Death$ucker has been busy these last few months with a succession of gigs and a string of releases. Acrnym is 21-year-old Calum Gunn from Glasgow in Scotland. He's been making noises with computers since about 1995 or something, but finally took it seriously in 2004. He's had 2 CDR releases on Bad Boxr and 2 digital download EP's on the NorthAmericanHardcore net label: NAHC087 and NAHC066, and has just signed a deal with Sublight Records of Canada to release a full-length CD album due out in April 2007, and a 12" on Bong-Ra's Kriss Records later this year! DJ C continues to drop his mashed up mix of hip-hop, bashment, grime, bounce, jungle, rock, folk, bhangra, dub-step and just about everything else at parties, clubs, and events worldwide.

In 2003 he began the Mashit record label with a 12-inch featuring one of his rough-and-rugged-ragga tracks along-side an Aaron Spectre remix. It sold out within weeks of it's release. The next 5 Mashit 12-inches also featured DJ C material, and they've been killing dance-floors and airwaves across the globe. Legendary BBC Radio One host John Peel (R.I.P.) chose Mashit as a "label of the month" in October 2004. The records have also been receiving airplay on other BBC shows, in addition to shows on London's Resonance FM, and Ninja Tune's syndicated Solid Steel show.

He's been hard at work producing beats and remixes for other labels as well. His mix of the M.I.A. tune U.R.A.Q.T., was released on her Galang '05 single by XL Recordings, and his mixes of the tune Gone A Jail, by reggae legend Gregory Isaacs, were recently released on Kid 606's Tigerbeat6 sub-label Shockout.

His last release for Death$ucker (DSR14) was a solid 3 track EP of what can only be discribed as "Boston-bounce", a style pioneered by DJ C himself. His latest 12-inch features some tracks from the vault and a few new joints.

On the A side we have "Who Wah Seek Yo"; the infamous, until now unreleased bluegrass-core tune, with it's killer banjo licks. Following that is LXC's remix of the same tune, taking crystal clean drum & bass and giving the hillbilly treatment.

On the B side "Come Back Version" is another track from the DJ C vaults, this time cutting up jungle beats with large doses of reggae and dancehall thrown in for good measure. "Gi Mi Di Break" is a short track which would work well as a DJ tool. "It Gets Worse" is a bass-heavy downtempo number, delving into the murky dubstep genre, and features the world-renowned thereminist Pamelia Kurstin.

Pisstank has been releasing tracks since 1999, firstly Amiga-core fury for labels like Kool.Pop, 555 Recordings and Wabana.Ore. After taking a break for a few years to run the fantastic Irritant Records label (whose release roster has included the talents of Knifehandchop, Donna Summer, Kid606, DJ Scud, Hecate and many more) where he was supposed to release "Drunk on Cock", which then morphed into "Very Pleasure" by our main man Duran Duran Duran. But in addition to running this most fantastic of record labels, he also made extreme breakcore nosie shit for years and years before that. He returns in 2007 with a new line in ravecore.

On the A side "Punching" delivers a solid ravecore anthem, melting happy hardcore with gabber kicks and amen licks. Lightas at the ready…this one has been ripping up dancefloors on dubplate for a year now, and finally gets unleashed on the world. On the flip we get "Fucked", a classic slice of breakcore mashup, blending synthy rave stabs with tight vocals and even a bit of klesmar thrown in for good measure. But wait, the party isn't over yet, there's still "Bassbins"; an anthem so damn heavy you won't know what's hit you. This one must be heard to be believed!!!

What a fucking awesome night!!! just recovering now...

a BIG THANK YOU to all who played and raved and especially my fellow goat-herders in arms Ana and Tom...it was a team effort, without you GOATLAB wouldn't be possible!! Well done!!!

The atmosphere was electric with smiles all round, and great music from everyone who played! Geisha were hard-to-the-core, Cdatakill was insane with his crazed beats (i think the crowd were a little bit confused at times ). Soundbites held the crowd for his whole set, and like he said he wouldn't touch his laptop throughout his entire set, just using his Wii controller!!!). Microphyst made a blinding debut! Hoonboy was fast and furios, and Blam got the mosh pit going!! Anakissed blew us away with her visuals and Gusset's back room 7" set was hilarious the front room was having with Nim Chimpski warming up, Punksi on the gypsy vibe, Jay Nom smashed it once again, Dub Boy and Ironside murdered it, and my little bro Dj Ruk finished things off nicely! and not to forget Descend, his set in the back room was eclectic and his drapes made Tb2 look goatastic!!

Soundbites brings a 4 track absolutely ravetastic 12" to Death$ucker Records. The Prodigy mash-up extravaganza, absolutely illegal and forbidden...the way we like it!!!

Soundbites (aka Robert van Loghem) started out as a drum and bass DJ / producer together with his long-time friend DJ Westrum. It seemed these two were inseparable when they started listening to the pirate radio station XTC in the early 90’s. They bought hardcore and rave records and trashed a lot of family turntables trying to build up their DJ skills. After a quiet period of about three years, they got infected with LTJ Bukem’s “Logical Progression” and started buying drum and bass records. Slowly they worked their way up, first with their own night “Zeist”, but later on playing at various happenings in Utrecht (NL). Soundbites and Westrum were then hosts at the biggest monthly drum and bass night in the Netherlands “Structure” @ Tivoli. Soundbites is into breakcore, electro, IDM, Prodigy, Madonna….”it’s all lovely to muck around with”. This is Soundbites’ first vinyl release, and Death$ucker is delighted to have him on board. If I'd been a member of Monkey Steak, I would've been shitting myself at that point - I mean, how do you follow that?! But with their usual easy-going nonchalance, Atki 2 and Hanuman wasted no time in taking us a whole other strange trip. I try to catch these two in action at least every six months, and each time you can be sure the set will be almost completely unrecognisable from the last time, not just the tracks, but changes in overall emphasis too. This was easily the most wide-ranging, far-reaching set I've witnessed to date. Hanuman's interest in ethnic & world music is increasingly coming to the fore, but they're also mounting a full-on 2-Step revival, filled with lashings of euphoric synth, breathy ghost-whispers of female chanteuses and blurred, oscillating trumpet-loops that put me in mind of Terry Riley's "Poppy Nogood". They're taking vocal aceppalas from Flow Dan and Joanna Newsom and forcing them to co-exist in a new mutually compatible environment, and they're skanking out with Junior Mervin in a righteous dubzone. Like Bass Clef, it's about serious music, but also about having a wild party, with a big grin on it's face. Monkey Steak were always on their own circular orbit, but now it's like they're constructing their own galaxy, built on a sublow foundation, where anything and everything can happen. Surely 2007 is the year they get to make an album...? (gig review by Gutterbreakz)

Welcome to 2007!!! Hope you all had a wicked xmas and NYE. I've been busy filing my Tax return, doing some freelance sound recording and design, and preparing for the onslaught of Death$ucker releases that are gonna hit the dancefloor in the coming months...but more news on that later ;)

At DSWAT we've had big re-stocks from Peace Off and Sozialistischer Plattenbau, plus some quality new releases; a new Duran Duran Duran 12" Blow Job Breaks on Mutant Sniper, a blinding debut double LP release from Brighton's Dr. Bastardo, the awesome Pink Ponies vs Blue Bytes 7" (featuring LXC, Error23 and Lords of Gabber!) and an experimental 12" from Itty Minchesta called Evergreens From the Walkmen Sect. The final installment of Doormouse's I "Heart" music series lands on Addict Records and well as the Society Suckers' new 12" on Alphacut inna hard drum and bass sytle. New out this week we've got a debut vinyl release from Goth-Trad!!! This guy is the king of grimecore in Japan, and I had the pleasure of meeting him when we played @ Milk in Tokyo earlier this year. He's also been picked up by Mary Anne Hobbs on the Breezeblock! GoatLab Radio Show

Bristol Breakcore Scene

It struck me last night as I was head-nodding to the wildly intense sounds of Xanopticon @ Plummet, that Bristol has no real central point for it's thriving Breakcore scene. Sure, there are forums like Hijack Bristol and Choke who feature a wealth of information on a broader musical spectrum, but with so many nights going on, there's no way for artists / promoters / punters looking for gigs in Bristol to find out what's going on. So, I've taken it upon myself as a pusher of this extreme brand of musical madness to inform and connect the scene via this here blog:

If you'd like to be added to the list, or have a suggestion for a night or band from Bristol, just add your comments to the post!

Back to Plummet...I arrived late due to a babysitting crisis, so missed Atki2 doing his live dubstep thing, but got there just as breackore legend Xanopticon was warming up the few people who braved the dancefloor for his sonic assault. What followed was a mind-blowing gabba-fied breakcore set to make Venetian Snares quake in his loafers! I have heard Ryan's stuff before on CD and meet him at last year's Wasted 2 party, but was not expecting the adrenaline rush or the unrelenting energy that he brought to the dancefloor. Unfortunately his laptop crashed just before he got a chance to play his last two tracks, which according to him were the best yet!

It's a real shame to experince such wonderful music without the crowd and atmosphere that it deserves. A Bristol debut like this should be packed out with people bouncing off the walls! Hopefully this blog will do just that! So spread the word, and let me know what's going down.

Electric Birdland

Yesterday I went to Liquid Mastering in London with Sam (aka Atki2) from Monkey Steak to cut the new "Electric Birdland" 12" EP for Death$ucker (DSR20). We met Jon (the other half of Monkey Steak), who managed to bunk off work for the afternoon to attend the cut. The lathe had been out of action for a few weeks, so Nick the studio engineer (who has cut the last seven Death$ucker releases to date!) was delighted to have it in working order again. It facinates me to think that this is cutting edge vinyl technology and it's 25 years old! Will they still be using analogue lathes in 25 years time? I guess it ultimately depends on the demand for vinyl as a music medium. So come on people, support vinyl culture!!!

Anyway the cut went really well! The A side of the EP features two tracks of jungle sweatness "Too Late" and "Toxic RIP VIP", the later a tribute to the late Toxic Dancehall (probably the UK's best ever breakcore night...in my slightly biased opinion ;). The B side is a more 2 step garage / grime flavoured affair, "Black Milk" and "Gaza Stripclub" have Monkey Steak flexing their bass muscles, proving that its not all about junglism. The release also features superb artwork by my bro John, check his stuff out at johnepainter.com. Hopefully "Electric Birdland" will be ready for it's launch at the next GoatLab party! Warrior Dubz & STFU

Last Friday I went down to Dubloaded @ Native with Anakissed, Bong-Ra and crew to see Mary-Anne Hobbs and The Bug launching the new Warrior Dubz 4LP on Planet Mu. Have a listen to Warrior Dubz on DSWAT and see what you think. I wasn't overly excited by the tracklisting due largely to my addiction to hard-ass breakcore, but there are a few sick dubz worth checking, namely Benga – ‘Music Box’, Digital Mystikz feat. Spen G – ‘Anti-War Dub’ and The Bug feat Flowdan – ‘Jah War’.

I had a brief chat with Mary-Anne after her DJ set (which was the best of the night in my opinion) about how she came to be the prophet of Dubstep, and she said it all started through contact with DJ Pinch in Bristol! DJ Pinch runs the Dubloaded nights alongside his record label Tectonic (not to forget his Subtext label which featured the first ever Vex'd vinyl releases!) and has produced some heavy dubstep tunes, including a remix for Monkey Steak!!! Check out his Planet Mu releases on DSWAT. I also spoke to Kevin Martin (aka The Bug) about doing some tracks for Death$uckr, to which he replied "I'm currenlty working on 3 albums", one of which will be released on Ninja Tune, which is an interesting turn for the well-known melow-jazz-funk label. Unfortunately we didn't stay to hear Kevin's set as my crew were begging me to go home...and we had a heavy night planned for STFU & Rave @ Black Swan the following night.

High Pressure Soundsytem (aka Greg) was at Dubloaded in full force...in fact the bass was so heavy we couldn't stay on the dancefloor for very long due to vibrating internal organs! Greg has been hassling me to let him rig out the next GoatLab with Drumcorps party on 1st Decemebr for free!!! now how can I argue with that?
