GOATLAB: Trippmatic, Gromov, Michael J Rocks Fri 20 June 2008

NB Gromov added to line-up since flyer went to print. PR below:

Bristol is to get a flavour of Eastern Europe - but not the stereotypes of Cossack dancing, vodka or Stalin-memorabilia - this is an invasion by the post-Cold War generation; doing their own thing, their own way; which involves lots and lots of noise. In June local party-throwers GoatLab, is hosting two of Eastern Europe top DJs, one of whom has his UK debut here in Bristol. Anton Nikolajewitsch Gromov, or just Gromov to his fans and Trippmatic are from Russia and Poland respectively. Gromov, a purveyor of musical forms from breakbeat oriented electronic music to bone-crushing drill n' bass has already established a strong reputation for powerful live performances from all over Europe from Moscow to St. Petersburg, from Berlin to Oslo prompting one review to describe his performance glowingly as, "..a vodka-soaked breakbeat massacre!"

Playing alongside is Wroclaw based Polish DJ and producer Tippmatic. He's been organising gigs and playing at virtually every breakcore gig in his native Poland for the last two years and met Bristol breakcore producer Parasite when he invited him over for a mini-tour last year. Now Parasite is returning the hospitality and we all get to hear the results of this East-meets-West mashup. Local acts War Against Sleep (with a psychedelic audio-visual feast with a goaty twist!) and Michael J Rocks (of the Bath based 1manarmy collective) join Bristol breakcore suprememo Parasite and others for a bilateral breakcore Eastern Block party.

Line up :

Trippmatic (Poland)
Gromov (Allergy Records, Russia)
Michael J Rocks (1man Army)
War Against Sleep
Parasite (Death$ucker)
Anakissed
Gusset
Dub Boy
Ironside
Jay Nom
Nim Chimpski

Goatlab! Sytheme & Toecutter! Fri 18 April 2008

Main Room (Acid/Breakcore/Mash Up):

Syntheme (Planet Mu / WeMe)
Lou Wood make's her Bristol debut with her phenomenal fucky acid. If you liked the The Doubtful Guest's acid rinse out at the last Goatlab you don't want to miss this. Another Planet Mu newcomer shows us how it should be done. Rumours abound about her true identity. Want to know more? Come and see for yourself.

Toecutter (System Corrupt / V/VM) - Australia
All the way from Australia, Toecutter is the original breakcore mentalist. And it's been a long time since he was last in Bristol. Having shared a house with Candi Hank in 99 and taken his name from the character in Mad Max, the desert sun must have got to him as he became the most frightening and original thing to mash it's way across musical styles in memory. Or is it just "Progressive Progressive Progrsv House"? Either way, he's a long way ahead of the rest of the game. With releases on System Corrupt, V/Vm Test, Digital Vomit, Bruchstellen, Mutant Sniper, and Death$ucker you know this must be quality.

General Disarray (Blunderphonics / Laptop Battle)
Matt Jackson one of Bristol's most talented up-and-coming breakcore producers! He is also one half of the Blunderphonics crew, who have organised many a good night down at the legendary Black Swan. He beat Parasite in the first round of Laptop Battle 5 only to be knocked out in the final by house favorite Defazed. His music is raw and full of energy, and he has also been known to play his live set entirely from a game pad using Max/MSP! See for yourself:

www.myspace.com/mattogdisarray

Parasite (Death$ucker / Peace Off)
Parasite is the owner of the Death$ucker label and the fantastic online electronic music shop DSWAT.net. As Parasite he makes some brilliantly twisted ragga jungle that manages to sound extremely dark and yet incredibly funky at the same time. Check out his releases on Peace Off and Damage as well as what Death$ucker back catalogue you can get your hands on. Don’t forget that this party is for his 30th birthday! Why not buy the man a drink while you’re at it!
www.parasite.org.uk
www.myspace.com/deathsucker

Anakissed (Death$ucker / plugincinema.com)
Death$ucker's VJ in residence and founder of the internet filmmaking website plugincinema.com. Performing a mish-mash-up of politically charged images and low-fi cinema, and pushing the realms of the visual jockey further are her trademark. She has accompanied Venetian Snares, The Bug, Soundmurderer and DJ Scud at the notorious Toxic Dancehall events in Bristol.
www.anakissed.com

Jay Nom (Death$ucker)
Jay Nom is resident at the GoatLab parties, and can be heard out and about Bristol spinning some of the sickest dancefloor breakcore, ragga jungle and evil drum and bass around. His deck skills are worthy of the finest!
www.myspace.com/jaynom

DJ Ruk
You might find Pete working at the DSWAT.net record shop during the week days, but when night falls beware! This guy will blow you away with his mentalist approach to mixing up the darkest drum & bass with the heaviest breakcore. He debuted at the Goatlab back in May last year at Timbuk2, and returns to get the party started!

Front Bar (Ragga/Dubstep/Bootlegs):

DJ Lumpy (West Of Bastard)
Dj Lumpy is a dj/mashup producer/promoter based in Bristol, England. He has been into playing around with other peoples music behind their backs for fun not profit since 2002 and has still not been sued within an inch of his life. His philosophy is that tunes should be danced to and smiled to if you want to get the best out of them, which has earned him the reputation for being a novelty act. Dj Lumpy specialises in protracted length, highly eclectic chillout sets, which range from ambient thru to drum and bass and breakcore, via ska, soul, rock, rave, calypso and electronica. A chillout room should be there to provide an alternative to whatever else is playing.
http://www.myspace.com/djlumpy

Gusset (Death$ucker)
Gusset have been scaring friends and punters alike since 1996, unleashing aural assaults at breakcore, techno and hip-hop nights around the city. Not to mention anywhere else that will have them, from Brighton to Madrid. They don't fit comfortably into any nice little pigeon hole and have a sound all of their own, but strangely no imitators.
www.gusset.co.uk

Dub Boy (Ruffnek Diskotek)
DJ Dub Boy is a Bristol based DJ (and co-promoter of Ruffnek Diskotek) currently playing a variety of sound-system musics aimed squarely at getting waists winding on the dancefloor. Over the last few years Dub Boy has blazed a trail on the Bristol club scene and beyond helping re-ignite Bristol's underground bass driven music scene. Playing what he has coined "Forward Thinking Bashment", Dub Boy is only confined by his mantra of spinning "riddim and bass".

Ironside (P.R.A.N.K / Bashout)
One of Bristol finest DJs and GoatLab resident, spinning anything from easy listening reggae bashment to 200 bpm jungle breakcore.

Death$ucker: Bringing Back the Raggacore!!!

What is Raggacore? According to Wikipedia:
Raggacore is a genre of music resembling a faster version of ragga jungle, or breakcore with dancehall, ragga or reggae style basslines and vocals.
This unique genre of reggae-infused breakcore first surfaced in 2001 with releases like Venetian Snares' "Clearance Bin" 7" (History Of The Future) and DJ Scud's "Full Watts" series. Artists like Bong-Ra and The Bug (with his label Razor X Productions) were also making ragga-fused music around the same time. Since those early days, there has been a move towards a more defined Raggacore sound from labels like Peace Off, Clash, Mashit, Shockout, Sozialistischer Plattenbau, Sprengstoff, Kool.POP and artists like Aaron Spectre, DJ C, Soundmurderer, Shitmat, FFF, Rotator, Istari Lasterfahrer, Krumble.

More recenlty a new wave of artists have been pushing the Raggacore sound. From Cambridge (UK) the Life4Land crew have been putting on free parties, releasing records and churning out tracks like there's no tomorrow. Peace Off have also been on the case pushing artists like Cardopusher, Dr. Bastardo, Krumble, Kovert and Repeater.

Ragga and Reggae music have been an big influence on my musical tastes, especially living in St. Pauls (Bristol's Reggae Mecca!). This can be heard in some of my own productions, in particular tracks like "Strong Like A Lion" and "Toxic Dancehall", but also on some past Death$ucker releases:
  • D$R01 Bong-Ra - Riddim Wars 7" (2002)
  • D$R02 Various - Ballroom Blitz CD (2003)
  • D$R07 Ripley - Ich Bin Defekt CD (2005)
  • D$R12 Aaron Spectre - Evil Most Foul 12" (2005)
Now Death$ucker is taking Raggacore to the next level, with a series of hot new releases in 2008!
  • First up is D$R27, a split 12" by the mysterious Johnny Clash and Stivs of Life4Land. On the A side Johnny Clash mashes up Damian Marley's version of "Exodus" with amen / gabba breaks at 240bpm! On the B side Stivs' classic tune "Dustbinmen" gets remixed and remastered for what has to be the tune of the year! http://www.fugazi.net/dswat/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1863
  • Following swiftly on is D$R28, a split 12" by Eustachian & The Teknoist (currently on tour in Europe). Eustachian proves that they aren't all about experimental thrash metal with "Stronface", a raggacore stormer with crazy time signatures and heavy bass. On the flip the Teknoist's track "Richie's Breakcore Love Song" doesn't quite fit the raggacore mold, but is none-the-less a future breakcore anthem., with lush strings and glitchy gabba kicks. http://www.fugazi.net/dswat/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=2011
  • Coming up in April 2008 is D$R29 by Krumble (Peace Off/Jungle Therapy). Krumble brings his unique blend of choppy breakcore and cut-up jungle bass terror to Death$ucker with two dancefloor killers "Time To Burn" and "Fucking Hostile". Link up Krumble's MySpace to hear previews of both tracks!
  • Next up is D$R30 by Stivs (Life4Land), with an 8 track, double 12" album (a 1st for Death$ucker!) featuring some of the finest ragga-jungle, breakcore and wonkstep EVER! Solid production skills and heavy basslines make this a sure-fire hit! Stay tuned for audio previews, but in the meantime check out Stivs @ the Goatlab in Feb 2008!

Music For Sleeping Available for Download

"Music For Sleeping" is one of my side projects first released in 2001, written in West Wales and Bristol between 1998-2001. Much of his ambient soundscape work was used for various art and short film / animation projects including Ana Kronschnabl's "Distance / Time" and "A Walk in the Woods" with Liz Milner (see http://dswat.streamlinetrial.co.uk/parasite/?Projects for more info).

Text on the inlay:

Sleep - A natural periodic state of rest for the mind and body, in which the eyes usually close and consciousness is compleatly or partially lost, so that there is a decrease in body movement and responsiveness to external stimuli. During sleep the brain in human beings and other mammals undergoes a characteristic cycle of brain-wave activity that includes intervals of dreaming.

Belgradeyard Sound System - Death$ucker Special

Death$ucker Records is Bristol's original mashup label founded and run by breakcore artist Parasite. Launched with a CDR release attacking the Pop Idol TV program back in 2001: D$R 0.5 - Popstar Liberation Front Steal Our Song [CDr] "...To de-reconstruct the most popular insipid trash being drip-fed to brain-dead consumers everywhere, and the results are six bars of pure gold..." said one review. The breakthrough for the label came with the release of D$R 1.0, the mighty Bong-Ra's Riddim Wars 7" - and Death$ucker's first vinyl release which was played by the late, great John Peel and resulted in a sold out run. "Absolutely ace ragga-jungle-rave-gabba mash up of the highest order... said the reviews! Since then, Death$ucker has released tracks by some of the best names in breakcore - Venetian Snares, Sickboy, Shitmat, Ripley, DJ C, Monster Zoku Onsomb and of course Parasite himself.

"On the tonight’s show Parasite, the owner of the label, speaks exclusively for BGYSS. what about the past, present and future of breakcore? You can look for the answers from one of the pioneers of the scene. Besides his live mix, you will hear a number of older and fresh releases from D$. Killer tunes which won’t leave you flat. Stay tuned, tonight after midnight!"

New GOATLAB Radio Show Online - December 2007

This month Dan Gusset & I had a surprise visit from Topher from France, who happened to be spending a few days in Bristol. Topher graced us with a 15 minute excerpt from a recent live set recorded in Nice. His unique brand of cut-up pop-electro (or "Absurd cultural mash-up bonanza mangled in breakbeat crossovers spawning shameless copyright infringements galore") is very dancefloor friendly, and I recommend you check his stuff out (especially his Ligeti tribute project with contributions from ยต-Ziq, HardOff, IJO, T-Toe and others). listen on...

Parasite @ UK Laptop Battle 5

Once again I get voted out in the 1st Round!!! Thankfully I went out to a worthy opponent; General Disarray, who said he would send me a demo for Death$ucker before kicking my ass on the night! Oh well, it was a good excuse to write some new tunes, as it's been far to long since last getting into the studio for anything that wasn't work related. Unfortunately Anakissed didn't get to VJ to my set due to lack of appropriate video cables to the projector. Nim Chimpski took these videos of the 1st round round to give you a little taste. Shot on his mobile phone, but you get the idea...

Binray (Zod Records / Werk Discs)

Binray started out with a traditional analogue plus Atari setup thru a guitar amp in a cow shed in Devon, cutting up breaks and various plants as well as attacking kitchenware and farm machinery. After a stint of djing electronics and drum'n'bass around Bristol, he dropped out of the beatmatching loop, and spent a year away from the UK. Things got exciting upon his return, giving up his freedom and buying a proper computer in 2000 .Tuning into the interweb frequencies he got sucked into the code and playful chaos vortex areas of sound. Binray applies a nondiscrimatory policy to all sound, everything can be recycled and used however rubbish it might seem at first. A favourite moment is when highly ordered synthetic strucures are broken apart releasing energy and, as in explosive chemicals, (an earlier interest)."

After a promising but stalled start as a low-fi Amiga 1200 toting indie band that made Portishead sound like the theme from My Little Pony, they regrouped and concentrated on a purely electronic offering. Their break came in 2002 when Death$ucker head-honcho Parasite booked them to support Fanny and Venetian Snares on board the good ship Thekla (the floating venue brought to Bristol by Vivian Stanshall as the Old Verity Showboat). Since then they have jumped at the opportunity to support any act their name sounds funny next to. They have a new CD coming out in November 2007 on Death$ucker Records with a bunch of their new tracks and remixes by Planet Mu's Shitmat and The Teknoist, Cock Rock Disco's Jason Forrest, Manchester's king of mash-up Hoonboy, V/Vm's hardoff (aka M-Pi), Parasite and Zod's Binray.

Electromeca & DJ Floorclearer Out Now!!!

D$R26: Electromeca - Brutal Funk EP - 12"

Since he discovered that FM-radio could sound way much better through his SP202, Electromeca didn't stop to cut-crush-distort-chop-chew-spit-reconstruct fat & dirty beats with a delicious guilty pleasure. That's it: James Brown driving a bulldozer through a wrecking yard, hectic B-Boys breakdancing in a puddle of motor oil, The Bomb Squad meets Russolo in a Z-movie disco-club, FM-radio harshbeats, dismantled stuttering beat-box, muddy boom-bap... Basically: hard & heavily damaged club music!

Tracklisting:

A1. Brutal Funk
A2. 202
B1. Competition
B2. Damaged Club Music

D$R24 DJ Floorclearer - Goat Slaughterer EP - 12"

Floorclearer spews his latest 4 track 12" all over your face in large, meaty chunks. You may remember him from such record labels as Death$ucker, Wrong Music and his very own Proboscus Records where he demonstrated his ability to sink breakcore balls deep, right into your cranium. After spending a lot of time touring and rinsing it out everywhere from Krakow to Newcastle and performing at Wasted, Breakcore Gives Me Wood, GoatLab and Overkill he's finally found time to teleport some music at you at a high dangerously velocity. "Goat Slaughterer" mixes up new style drum n bass, Slayer, mosh breaks and punk guitars in DJ Floorclearer's unique style. This is the perfect antidote to a world full of gang violence, global warming, war and Noel Edmonds.

Tracklisting:

A1. Suffering
A2. Smell Awaits
B1. Lets Have It Cemetery Style
B2. Belgian Waffles
